The Owls suffered a slender defeat away at Cardiff City last weekend but attentions now turn towards the Carabao Cup with a home tie against Mansfield in midweek

Wednesday boss Xisco Munoz is still searching for his first league win

Sheffield Wednesday are the only team in the EFL yet to register a point so far this season. It has been a sobering return to the Championship not just for the Owls, but also new manager Xisco Munoz.

The Spaniard’s previous and only taste of English football’s second tier saw him enjoy completely different emotions, leading Watford to an immediate promotion back to the Premier League.

Sadly, the same outcome is about a million miles away for Wednesday. After four straight league defeats it looks like being a long, hard season of struggle. Against Cardiff City last weekend there were flashes of positivity and the team undoubtedly posted their strongest performance under Munoz. But the end result was the same, with the team still stuck on zero points.

For Munoz, it is about going back to basics and ensuring they can keep the ball out of their own net.

“This is the Championship, and it’ll be all season, reflected the Owls’ manager. “The first thing that we need to improve, and I’ll say it again, is the clean sheets. You cannot concede goals every game, because it means you need to score two as a minimum.

“We need to stop some situations, and we need to understand how we can not lose our games. Today we lost our game, the opponent didn’t beat us. We lost it because of mistakes, and in the Championship they will score if you make these mistakes.”

Tuesday night sees attention switch towards the Carabao Cup with a second round home tie against Mansfield Town.
