Wolves beat deadline to sign ‘really important’ midfielder

Wolverhampton Wanderers transfer news from BirminghamLive as the club signs Jean-Ricner Bellegard

Wolves have beaten the transfer deadline to clinch the signing of midfielder Jean-Ricner Bellegarde from Strasbourg.

The 25 year old has signed a five year deal after the clubs agreed a £12.8m fee to complete the deal before the transfer window closed at 11pm.

Bellegarde, who can play in central midfield or out wide, has made an impressive start to this season with two goals and two assists in his three games. The Paris-born former France under-21 international has spent the last four years with the Ligue 1 club having moved from Lens.

Sporting director Matt Hobbs said: “He’s a player the recruitment team flagged towards the end of last season, and he’s started this season very well. He’s athletic, technical and has ability to drive with the ball, and you can see from his goal and assist record that he’s had an excellent start to this season.

“He’s another player who adds to our depth and gives us something different. He will add creativity and he’s got good end product. With the runners that we have going forward, his athleticism from the middle of the pitch, as well as his strength and his ability to find that final ball – as he’s shown in France – will be really important to us.”

Bellegarde is Wolves sixth and final signing of the transfer window, joining Tom King, Matt Doherty, Enso Gonzales, Santiago Bueno and Tommy Doyle. Wolves return to action on Sunday when they are away to Crystal Palace.
