Crystal Palace fan arrested after reportedly racially abusing a Wolves player at Selhurst Park
Crystal Palace and Wolves have both issued comments following the arrest of a home fan for allegedly racially assaulting a visiting player during the match at Selhurst Park.
A Crystal Palace fan has been arrested on suspicion of racially abusing a Wolves player at Selhurst Park.
Palace won the game 3-2, but the result was tainted by the incident recounted by the visiting player. The Eagles verified that the person was detained and arrested.
“During today’s match, it was brought to our attention that a Wolverhampton Wanderers player reported receiving racist abuse from an individual located in the Main Stand,” Palace said in a statement.
“The Met Police, the Premier League, and matchday officials were all notified, and our security team immediately removed the individual from the stadium, where he was detained and arrested,” said the statement. He is now being investigated by the police. Of course, we will support that inquiry while simultaneously conducting our own.
“We are extremely disappointed that this incident occurred today and extend our heartfelt apologies and support to the Wolves player involved.” We have zero tolerance for any type of prejudice or racist abuse as a club. It belongs neither in football nor in society.”
The Wolves also issued a statement. “We are very disappointed to report that one of our players was the target of discriminatory abuse by an opposing fan during today’s game with Crystal Palace,” the statement said.
“We immediately reported the incident to Crystal Palace, the Premier League match centre, and the matchday officials.” Crystal Palace security acted quickly to remove the suspect and contacted police at Selhurst Park.
“We fully support the player involved and have provided a formal statement to the Metropolitan Police.” Racism and prejudice in any form are utterly abhorrent and must never be tolerated.”
After winning, the Palace players celebrate.
Palace eventually won 3-2 thanks to a brace from Odsonne Edouard. The Frenchman gave Roy Hodgson’s team the lead in south London, but Hwang Hee-chan equalized moments later with an off-the-shoulder finish.
Palace retook the lead through Eberechi Eze, before Edouard scored his second goal of the game to secure their second Premier League victory of the season. Wolves, who have only one win in their first four games, got a late consolation goal from Matheus Cunha.
