Ashley Young becomes Everton’s first signing of the summer following Aston Villa’s departure.
Ashley Young, 38, has signed a one-year contract with Everton; the England international had a physical on Tuesday; Young will join Sean Dyche’s squad for a pre-season camp in Switzerland; Everton has held negotiations with Manchester United about signing Anthony Elanga.
Ashley Young joined Everton on a free transfer after leaving Aston Villa.
The 38-year-old England international has agreed to terms with Everton on a one-year contract, becoming the club’s first signing of the summer.
Everton are also reportedly in negotiations with Manchester United about signing forward Anthony Elanga.
Young, who became a free agent after his Villa contract expired at the end of last season, chose Everton over other Premier League, Championship, and European offers.
The former Manchester United full-back credits Everton manager Sean Dyche for influencing his choice to join the club, having previously worked with him at Watford.
“I’m delighted to be an Everton player and to have joined this massive club,” he said on evertontv. “I can’t wait for the season to start because walking out at Goodison Park and hearing the passionate fans behind me will be an incredible feeling.”
“The manager was crucial in convincing me to sign.” I know what his passion and desire are like because I know him. His honesty, willingness to work hard, and passion for the game are unparalleled.
“I know things haven’t gone well for Everton in recent seasons, but speaking with him and hearing what he wants to do to turn the club around was a key factor in my decision.”
“The other is roughly the size of Everton.” It’s a massive club with a fantastic fanbase. Having them on my side is an incredible chance. I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to be here, and I can’t wait to get started.”
Young is scheduled to join Dyche’s squad this week for a pre-season camp in Switzerland, ahead of a friendly against Stade Nyonnais on Friday.
Everton have Elanga meetings with Manchester United
Everton and Manchester United have held preliminary negotiations about signing forward Anthony Elanga.
They attempted to sign Elanga, 21, on January’s Deadline Day, but Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag blocked the move.
All alternatives are on the table, but it is believed that United would want to negotiate a permanent deal – or at the very least a loan with an obligation.
Everton are said to be interested in a number of players in that position, including Arnaut Danjuma – who almost joined the club in January – and Leeds United’s Wilfried Gnonto.
Is there finally light at the end of the tunnel for Everton?
Everton’s saga appears to be an unending one.
Upheaval on the board, financial problems, a previous manager’s legal action, and so on.
However, there may be some light at the end of the tunnel in the recent club announcement of the formation of an interim board of directors, as well as news out of New York of a corporate registration by potential investors MSP Sports Capital, which announced a £130 million investment.
Bill Kenwright: Everton chairman to stay during ‘critical phase of transition’
For a long time, supporters have demanded that the existing board be removed.
While the departures of CEO Denise Barrett-Baxendale, financial director Grant Ingles, and non-executive board member Graeme Sharp granted 75% of that request, the chairman Bill Kenwright has arguably received the most attention, and with the announcement that he will remain in position during a transitional period, many supporters expressed concerns that nothing had or will change.
