The midfielder was part of the side that fell short of reaching the Premier League in last year’s Championship play-off final as Wembley beckons for him again in League One

Former Terriers midfielder Jon Russell is actively seeking vindication for the heartbreak of missing out on a place in the Premier League in last year’s Championship play-off final as he prepares to help Barnsley to promotion from League One.

Russell was part of the Huddersfield Town side that lost 1-0 to Nottingham Forest at Wembley last year, coming off the bench to replace Naby Sarr early in the second half of the game.

Carlos Corberan’s side had two extremely strong penalty shouts turned down both by the referee on the pitch and by VAR, leaving a sour taste in the mouth of players and fans alike. That loss also precipitated Corberan’s abrupt pre-season departure, with Russell also leaving for Oakwell in the January transfer window having fallen out of favour following a big drop in his own personal form.

Russell told the Yorkshire Post ahead of Monday’s League One final clash with Sheffield Wednesday: “I have got to change around what happened last year. It was not the result we wanted and it is definitely unfinished for me. You keep thinking about it, two clear penalties. [The referee) didn’t give it and then he’s gone and retired.

“It was a sticky situation. We knew we should have won that game. It was quite a turnaround. There was a lot of behind the scenes stuff. It was not to do with the players and a lot of things changed, with managerial roles and stuff like that and it affected us in not so good a way.

“I try not to dwell on things as it ruins everything. It did take a toll on my summer, but it’s gone now and you look forward. I am happy that they managed to stay in the Championship.”
