A report released today has explained how Jesse Lingard was perceived in training for Nottingham Forest. The 30-year-old was allowed to leave the Reds earlier this month after just a year in charge.

Now, the speculation has started over why he’s left. The Athletic have covered an in-depth piece on this and there were no ill feelings towards Lingard during his time at the City Ground.

Lingard was signed with the intention of being the big-name signing who came in to send a message out. West Ham had wanted him but it’s thought that Forest blew them out of the water with their offer.

What comes next for Lingard remains to be seen. He will likely have some offers to consider but it seems very unlikely that he will earn another move to England after his Forest spell.

The versatile forward failed to register a goal or an assist during his 17 league appearances for the club. He did score twice and claim two assists but they came during the Carabao Cup campaign.

Lingard’s poor league form wasn’t through a lack of trying though. The latest report claims that the 32-cap England player was dedicated to training and enjoyed going over his performances with the club’s analysts.

There was also a claim that he held a constant desire to be the best he could be. That news will delight, and perhaps surprise, the club’s supporters with some often feeling like he could do more.

Clearly, the player’s form wasn’t through any lack of determination. He was always trying his best to get into form through performing in training and he remains a very misunderstood character.

The World Cup came at the wrong time for Lingard. He was just starting to strike up a relationship with Brennan Johnson and Morgan Gibbs-White on the pitch when football took a break for a month.

It’s not clear what the future does hold for Lingard. A move abroad does seem to be logical at this stage but ultimately it will depend on what the departed Forest player fancies doing next.

Lingard leaves Forest with the club’s best wishes. It certainly sounds as though the player left no stone unturned in his quest to be a better player during his time at the City Ground.
