Man United released a statement from McQueen’s family on Thursday, announcing his passing.

In 2021, McQueen was diagnosed with vascular dementia.

“We hope that, in addition to many great football memories, he will be remembered for his character,” his family added. “Our house was always full of friends, family, and football, just as it was in his final few months as he fought so bravely against dementia.”

“The disease took him too soon, but he certainly lived life to the fullest, the ultimate entertainer, the absolute heart and soul of every occasion, the most fun dad anyone could wish for.”

McQueen began his career at Scottish club St. Mirren before moving on to England. When he joined Manchester United for 495,000 pounds (now $626,000), he became the country’s most expensive player.

He won the English Premier League with Leeds and the FA Cup with Manchester United. He also played 30 international games for Scotland.

McQueen temporarily managed Scottish club Airdrieonians and coached St. Mirren and Middlesbrough after his playing career.

McQueen “oozed command and charisma” at the heart of United’s defense, according to the club.

“Everyone at Manchester United is heartbroken by the loss of our beloved former defender, Gordon McQueen,” the club said. “Our hearts go out to his family at this terribly sad time.”

Leeds was also “saddened” to learn of his death.

“Gordon was one of the best center backs I had the privilege of playing with,” Bryan Robson, a former Manchester United teammate, remarked. “With his flair, courage, and big personality, he was a perfect fit for Manchester United, and that’s why the fans loved him.”

“Most importantly, he was a brilliant individual with a huge heart.” He brightened each room he entered, and that is how he should be remembered.”
