Leicester City responds in three words to a meaningful letter from a player amid January transfer speculation.
The midfielder was part of the Senegal side that was knocked out of the World Cup by England on Sunday night, according to the latest Leicester City news.
Nampalys Mendy, a Leicester City midfielder, has resorted to social media to express his disappointment at Senegal’s elimination from the World Cup.
On Sunday night, the African country faced England in the round of 16 stage, with Mendy named to the starting lineup. He didn’t face City teammate James Maddison, who was an unused England substitute.
Despite primarily playing as a substitute for City, Mendy has established himself as a crucial player for Senegal, helping the country win the Africa Cup of Nations and qualify for the World Cup. Finishing second in group A in the group stages qualified them for the knockout round against England.
Gareth Southgate’s side won 3-0 thanks to goals from Jordan Henderson, Harry Kane, and Bukayo Saka, advancing them to the quarter-finals against France. However, as a result of the outcome, Mendy and his colleagues have returned home from Qatar, bringing their World Cup voyage to an end.
Only a few days after the game, reports surfaced about possible interest in Mendy during the January transfer window. Following the midfielder’s withdrawal from the World Cup, Turkish giants Besiktas are said to be ready to’make an offer’ to City.
Mendy broke his quiet on social media on Wednesday night, offering a poignant message to supporters who had backed him throughout the tournament. “It took us a few days to digest, but in hindsight, we can be proud of the World Cup that we achieved,” he said in a message translated from French.
“We never cheated, working tirelessly to make you proud.” Thank you to all of our supporters, both on and off-site, for keeping us going. Senegal, come on.”
The tweet elicited a response from City’s official Instagram account, which responded with “Well done, Papy!” and two applauding hand emojis. Senegal football’s official account then responded with a love emoji.
City teammate Ricardo Pereira responded in French, saying, “Way to go, my little one.” Rachid Ghezzel, a former City resident, commented, “Proud of you my brother.”
Mendy will have only six months left on his contract with the club when the January transfer market opens, creating some ambiguity over his future. He has appeared in six Premier League games this season, although all of them have come in the last six league games before the World Cup.
