ARRESTED LEEDS STARS

Lee Bowyer and Jonathon Woodgate may be in trouble after being detained and then freed on bail by police following a major fight outside a nightclub in Leeds’ city center last week.

The two players had been key members of David O’Leary’s title-challenging club, but they are being investigated for their suspected role in an incident that left a 19-year-old man hospitalized with brain injuries.

The unnamed victim is in stable condition at Leeds General Infirmary, while former Charlton midfielder Bowyer, 22, and England defender Woodgate, 19, will be questioned about the incident, which is thought to have involved numerous others.

Any action taken against the Leeds players may jeopardize their chances of making Kevin Keegan’s side for the Euro 2000 Finals. Bowyer, in particular, has been brilliant recently and appeared to be on his way to being promoted to the senior squad after excelling in the England Under-21s.

“At the moment, we are trying to establish a motive for this assault,” stated a West Yorkshire Police spokesman. “The victim was injured in the head and is currently in the hospital.” The number of white guys participating in the event is unknown.”

“The Club can confirm that Lee Bowyer and Jonathon Woodgate have been questioned by the police regarding an incident that occurred in Leeds city centre last week,” Leeds chairman Peter Ridsdale said late Tuesday afternoon.

“Leeds United believes that all players have a personal responsibility to act in a manner that is appropriate for their position in the local community.”
