Nottingham Forest player suffers injury blow as manager ‘fearing the worst’

Latest Nottingham Forest injury news as midfielder Lewis O’Brien suffers an injury while in action for Middlesbrough against Watford in the Championship

Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis O’Brien has suffered a potentially serious injury while on loan at Middlesbrough.

O’Brien took a knock to his ankle on Saturday afternoon during a 3-2 win away at Watford, and he was substituted after just 36 minutes. Speaking after the match, Boro boss Michael Carrick admitted he is “fearing the worst” for the 24-year-old.

Carrick warned it “doesn’t look good” for O’Brien, though the midfielder will have to undergo a scan before discovering the full extent of his injury. If it is serious, O’Brien could end up returning to Forest for treatment.

“It doesn’t look good, to be honest,” Carrick said post-match on Saturday. “We’re fearing the worst with Lewis. We’ll have to wait for scans, but it could leave him out for a bit of time that.

“It was a whack on his ankle/bottom of his shin bone. Fingers crossed it doesn’t end up being as bad as feared, but at the minute it doesn’t look too good.”

O’Brien has made six appearances on loan for Middlesbrough so far this season, with five of those coming in the Championship. He is yet to score or assist from midfield.

Latest Nottingham Forest news as Steve Cooper’s Reds draw 1-1 with the Bees at the City Ground

Nottingham Forest will be sweating on the fitness of midfielder Nicolas Dominguez after their 1-1 draw with Brentford.

The Argentine secured a point for the Reds with his first goal for the club when he headed home in the 65th minute at the City Ground. He was then forced off with what looked to be a groin problem with 10 minutes to go after injuring himself when he stretched to make a challenge.

Head coach Steve Cooper was without defenders Ola Aina and Nuno Tavares, as well as midfielder Ryan Yates, against the Bees. Meanwhile, Brazilians Danilo and Felipe continue to be sidelined with hamstring and knee issues respectively.

The absence of full-backs Aina and Tavares saw Moussa Niakhate fill in at left-back for Sunday’s game, with summer signing Murillo handed his debut alongside Willy Boly in the heart of a back four. However, Niakhate was sent off in the second half, leading to Harry Toffolo to come off the bench and set up Dominguez for the equaliser.
