St George Illawarra Dragons youngster Stevie Upulasi dies aged 19

The Dragons and Sharks will honour the footballer when they meet in the NRL on Saturday.

The St George Illawarra Dragons have confirmed the death of 19-year-old forward Stevenson Upulasi.

‘Stevie’ Upulasi died in a car accident in Sydney on Monday.

Upulasi was promoted to the NRL side’s under-20s team this season as he continued his rise through the Dragons and Cronulla Sharks junior systems.

He played for St George’s under-18s team in 2019, having spent prior years as a Sharks junior.

He had also played for the Gymea Gorillas in the Cronulla-Sutherland junior competition.

The Dragons and Sharks are due to play in the NRL on Saturday, with a moment’s silence planned to honour Upulasi.

“The St George Illawarra Dragons are deeply saddened by the passing of Jersey Flegg player Stevenson ‘Stevie’ Upulasi,” the club said on Thursday.

“The Dragons send their sincere condolences to the friends and family of Stevie at this time.”

“The loud giant that made anyone around him feel safe and loved. The funniest and weirdest boy I know. The greatest Son, brother, cousin and friend anyone could ask for.

“You were our son Mia. We loved you like a son and you will always be my massive overgrown Son.

“Mia was the most beautiful respectful kid that grew into an even better adult. He was a work horse that never stopped, he would do anything and everything for everyone. He was perfect.

“Mia tragically left us on Monday after a car accident and left us all completely broken. He was our kids bestfriend and brother.

“Mia I love you more than you will ever know. I miss your contagious laugh and your loud voice. I miss your company and I miss our chats.

“We just miss you Mia. Love you forever.
