Eddie Howe ready for key Newcastle United break as 12 players depart before testing period

Newcastle United have a host of players flying around the world for international games ahead of a key week when club football returns

Newcastle United’s hard-fought draw away at West Ham United rounded off a fine return to form for the Magpies which has seen the side make it seven games unbeaten since the last international break. The shares were spoiled in the capital despite a quickfire Alexander Isak brace, with Eddie Howe’s men showing a different side to the team that dismantled Kylian Mbappé’s Paris Saint-Germain in midweek.

It was a group that dug in and battled hard in a cagey affair, yet one that should have walked away with the three points according to the Newcastle boss. Howe will be hoping that the timely break will allow key players Sven Botman, Isak and Joelinton the chance to recover from injuries and be in contention to feature when Newcastle welcome Crystal Palace and Borussia Dortmund to St James’ Park in two weeks’ time.

While some will benefit from a rest, a large group are away in international duty. For those called up to their national teams, we have compiled a list of Newcastle United’s internationals and what they’ll be facing over the next week or so.

Kieran Trippier

England right-back Kieran Trippier remains a dependable figure in Gareth Southgate’s squads, this time called up for the Three Lions’ friendly clash with Australia on Friday, October 13 before reigning European Champions Italy’s visit Wembley on Tuesday, October 17. In a repeat of the Euro 2020 final, England know that a win over the Azzurri could seal qualification for next summer’s tournament depending on other results.

Sandro Tonali

Tonali and co will face Trippier’s England out for revenge after the Three Lions’ win in Naples the last time the sides met. Before that, Luciano Spalletti’s men face strugglers Malta in Bari on Saturday, October 14. Tonali’s Italy round their qualification campaign off in November as they face familiar foes North Macedonia and Serhiy Rebrov’s Ukraine.

Bruno Guimarães

Brazilian star Guimarães has the chance to add to his 14 caps for the Seleção when the South American giants face Venezuela at Cuiabá’s Arena Pantanal on Friday, October 13. The following Wednesday, Brazil head south to face a resurgent Uruguayan side now managed by former Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa. Interim coach Fernando Diniz has guided the five-time world champions to two wins in as many fixtures, thanks to victories over Bolivia and Peru.

Fabian Schär

Switzerland’s opener in this international break in Israel has been postponed given current events in the region. Schär will therefore have to wait until Sunday, October 15 to win his 78th cap, with the Swiss knowing that a win over Belarus in St Gallen could potentially seal qualification dependent on other results.

Miguel Almiron

One of the heroes of the memorable victory over PSG, Almiron has been handed his latest Paraguay call up by new boss Daniel Garnero. La Albirroja face a daunting trip to world champions Argentina on Friday, October 13 before hosting Bolivia the following Tuesday as they go searching for their first win of their World Cup qualifying campaign.

Martin Dúbravka

Dúbravka’s second-placed Slovakia could take a giant step towards booking their ticket to Germany next summer as they travel to face Portugal in a top of the table clash in Porto on Friday, October 13. Three days later, Francesco Calzona’s men travel to the aptly named Luxembourg Stadium as they play high-flying Luxembourg.

Tino Livramento

After a notable impressive display in the Carabao Cup victory over Manchester City, Livramento finds himself back in the England u21 fold. The Young Lions host Serbia u21 on Thursday, October 12 in Nottingham before travelling to Slovakia to face Ukraine on Monday, October 16.

Lewis Hall

One of Eddie Howe’s summer recruits, Hall will link up with the England u20 set up for a duo of U20 Elite League fixtures, first away to Romania on Thursday, October 12 before hosting Portugal on Tuesday, October 17. The 19-year-old is yet to be capped at u20 level despite featuring for Lee Carsley’s u21 outfit in June.

England u18 coach Ryan Garry has handed young Newcastle midfielder Anthony Munda a call up to the Young Lions set up, ahead of friendlies with Belgium on Wednesday, October 11, Morocco on Saturday 14th October and South Korea on Tuesday, October 17.

Leo Shahar and Trevan Sanusi

Academy talents Leo Shahar and Trevan Sanusi will join up with the England u17 squad for a double header against Norway on Wednesday, October 11 and Friday, October 13 at St George’s Park. These fixtures are preparation ahead of November’s UEFA U17 EURO first qualifying round.

Jamal Lewis

Elsewhere, Watford loanee Jamal Lewis has been named in Michael O’Neill’s latest Northern Ireland squad. The Green and White Army host minnows San Marino at Windsor Park on Saturday, October 14 before Slovenia’s visit to Belfast on Tuesday, October 17.
