Nottingham Forest midfielder issues injury update after surgery

The latest Nottingham Forest news as the midfielder suffered an injury which will see him sidelined for months

Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis O’Brien has provided an update on social media after undergoing surgery on an injury picked up while on loan.

The 24-year-old suffered an ankle injury while playing for loan side Middlesbrough against Watford in the championship earlier this month. It comes after he signed a season-long loan deal with the Teesside club after returning from a spell with DC United.

Boro boss Michael Carrick confirmed last week that the midfielder was due to see specialists and surgeons over the injury. O’Brien has now confirmed that he has undergone successful surgery this week to rectify the problem.

Taking to social media, O’Brien wrote: “Surgery done. Grateful for the amazing medical team and all the love and support. Here’s to healing and coming back stronger.”

O’Brien has made five Championship appearances for Middlesbrough since joining the club on loan. He was drafted in as an emergency left-back for his latest two appearances, due to injuries in the position for his loan club.

The player joined Forest from Huddersfield in the summer of 2022, but failed to have an impact as Forest played in the Premier League. He was close to joining Blackburn on loan in January, but the deal fell through at the last minute, leading to him joining DC United, then managed by Wayne Rooney, in March.

“Lewis will be out for a period of time. It could be two to three months, which is disappointing,” he said via TeesideLive. “He’s going to see a surgeon at the start of next week. Hopefully he gets that surgery done, he’ll come back with us, rehab and recover as soon as he can.

“He’s a terrific lad and character and will do all he can to get fit as quickly as he can. I’m really disappointed for him because he’s come in and fitted in so well and it’s a big blow for us, but as well for Lewis. We’ll work with him and get him back as quickly as we can.

“There’s a fracture to the tibia as well as a little bit of ankle damage. It’s unfortunate because it was innocuous. His foot got stuck in the turf and he took a bit of a kick at the same time. Disappointing, really disappointing, but football is football and Lewis will make the best of the situation as much as he can and we’ll have to move on quick.”
