Wigan Warriors removed from Academy Grand Final after counting blunder

The Warriors were due to play in the final this Sunday but have been replaced by Warrington Wolves, who they defeated last week.

Wigan Warriors will not play in this weekend’s Academy Grand Final after it emerged that they made too many interchanges in their semi-final victory over Warrington Wolves. The young Warriors defeated the Wire 18-12 last weekend to advance to the final, which will be played on Sunday.

However, the RFL Board has determined that they are not eligible for the match after making 12 interchanges during the game, four more than the permitted eight. As a result, their place in the final will instead be taken by Warrington. The final takes place at St Helens’ Totally Wicked Stadium this weekend.

An RFL statement read: “Clearly, this is a difficult decision to reach. The Board recognises the emotion on all sides here and especially the impact on everyone involved.”

The news caught the attention of social media users. David Beeston said: What a shame that is for the young lads who worked so hard. Regardless of who is to blame, it’s very sad that this has been allowed to happen.”

The Wigan Way added: “1. It’s somebody’s job to be on top of this 2. How has it made it to Friday before anyone has noticed? 3. Ruins a year’s work for Wigan’s academy 4. Warrington lads won’t have prepared for this game so it’s impossible for them to win. Why even bother?”
