The Astros could target a star left-handed pitcher in free agency .
The Houston Astros may try to add a top left-hander to their starting rotation by pursuing him as a free agent.
One of the main issues that arose for the Houston Astros during the playoffs was how their pitching staff struggled in the big time.
Ace Framber Valdez is a shell of himself; Justin Verlander looks like an aging veteran; they don’t have a reliable third starter; and the bullpen has regressed from last year.

That’s a terrible combination when you’re trying to win a World Series title.
However, the Astros had the eventual champion Texas Rangers on the line in the ALCS and still have the potential to win more titles if they can get their needs met.

The starting pitcher should be one of them and it’s likely they target star outfielder Eduardo Rodriguez to fit into their rotation.
On the surface, Houston appears ready for Lance McCullers Jr.
and Luis Garcia returned from injury, but it’s unclear how they will fare after such a long time away from baseball.
Rodriguez is an effective starting pitcher and is having one of his best seasons.

This could make it difficult for the Astros to convince a starter to sign with them.

Houston Astros: Ace Framber Valdez won't pitch in All-Star Game
Before moving to Detroit, he spent six seasons with the Boston Red Sox and was apparently looking for an East Coast team to enter free agency.
However, Houston should do their due diligence and see if Rodriguez wants to sign with them to compete for a championship.
