Tommy DeVito is the unexpected star for the Giants in a season of injuries and disappointment

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.
(AP) – The New York Giants’ season began with high expectations, hopes of making the playoffs for the second year in a row and big dreams of winning their fifth Super Bowl.
So it’s no surprise that they began their farewell week by focusing on the exploits of the rising star Tommy DeVito.
The season went like this.
New York’s hopes of closing the gap on the Eagles and Cowboys in the NFC East and the rest of the NFL’s elite were quickly dashed by a brutally tough schedule and injuries, especially on offense.
The Giants won two of their first 10 games, and the expected joy left the Meadowlands.
With five games left in the regular season, New York is 4-8 with two games remaining against Philadelphia, which leads the league with a 10-1 record.

A feel-good story is written out of disappointment.
That doesn’t include Daniel Jones, Saquon Barkley, Darren Waller, Dexter Lawrence, Kayvon Thibodeau or any other big-name players on the team.
That’s DeVito, an undrafted rookie free agent raised in New Jersey who was released at the end of training camp and signed to the practice squad.
His job was to study and train as an auxiliary arm, and then he drove 20 to 25 minutes back to his parents’ home in Cedar and Grove, where he was fed a home-cooked meal every day and had a bed.
I had to get it fixed.

He’s a fan favorite and a guy with a carefree style that’s hard to dislike.
The MetLife Stadium crowd greeted him with the loudest cheers when he was introduced as the Giants’ starting quarterback before Sunday’s 10-7 win over the Patriots.
“It was a lot of fun” for DeVito – the last of the season when Jones suffered a torn neck (October 8) and ACL (November 8), and substitute Tyrod Taylor suffered a torn rib (October).
It was a ride.
See.
29) – Collapses due to injury.
This unexpectedly made DeVito the No.
1 quarterback.
DeVito not only did his job, he led the Giants to their first two-game winning streak of the season.
The Syracuse, Illinois product is popular with teammates on both teams for his poise and swagger.
This match is not too big for him.
He also avoided most ball losses.
