Steelers Sign Former Jets WR Denzel Mims to Practice Squad

The Pittsburgh Steelers are adding the Jets former second-round pick.

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers are signing former New York Jets wide receiver Denzel Mims to the practice squad, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.

Mims, the Jets’ second-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, played 30 games, including 15 starts, over the first three seasons of his career. After New York added outside options and new draft picks, they decided to release Mims.

The 25-year-old has caught just 42 passes for 676 yards and has yet to score a touchdown in the NFL. His best season came as a rookie, when he caught 23 passes for 357 yard

Mims will need to work his way onto the field for the Steelers after jumping on a moving train, as Mike Tomlin says. There are no expectations for him currently, but with the Steelers making changes to their receiver core, he could be an option as an active roster participant in the future.

Pittsburgh recently released Dez Fitzpatrick and has made Gunner Olszewski inactive for three of their four games. Diontae Johnson is expected to return from injured reserve after the Week 6 bye week.
