How former Michigan football players fared at their new schools in 2023 Several Michigan football players transferred last offseason.
Michigan dominated the transfer portal this offseason.
The Wolverines have signed nine players, nearly all of whom will make a big impact in Ann Arbor in 2023.
If there is a profit, there will always be a loss.
The University of Michigan lost several members of its 2022 roster, including former starters.
In the world of transfer portals, there are always players who want to go elsewhere for various reasons.
This is what happened to all former Michigan players on new teams entering the 2023 transfer portal.
We’ve also included some notable names from the 2022 cycle.


Eric Orr Tight End Eric Orr transferred to Iowa and was a key contributor early on.
He tore his ACL against Wisconsin and only played in seven games.
Currently, Orr remains Iowa’s top pass catcher with 299 yards.
He also leads the team with three touchdowns.
Junior receiver went down against Texas and also suffered a season-ending injury.
Anthony had some big games at Michigan, but looked like a star on Oklahoma’s offensive line.
Anthony gained 429 yards in the six games he played, making him the Sooners’ top receiver.
He finished the 2023 season with a touchdown.
Alan Bowman At his third school, Bowman did well enough to secure the starting quarterback role.
Bowman spent time at Michigan State, where Cade McNamara and J.J.
McCarthy later enrolled at Texas Tech.
In 12 games at OSU, Bowman threw for 2,808 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.
The Cowboys went 9-3 in the regular season.
Bowman and Oklahoma State will play Texas this Saturday in the Big 12 Championship.
Zach Carpenter Great offensive lineman earned All-Big Ten honorable mention at Indiana University in 2023.
He started all 12 games for the Hoosiers at center and allowed just 10 pressures.
Carpenter entered the transfer portal after Tom Allen was fired.
Damani Dent Former three-star defenseman followed Biff Poggi to Charlotte.
He did not play for the 49ers this season.
Dent also didn’t play at Michigan.
Lewis Hansen The former four-star tight end transferred to UConn, where he got a chance to be closer to his home and on the field.
Hansen had just two receptions for 33 yards this season for the Huskies.
A.J.
Henning Henning was a notable player who transferred from Michigan State last season.
Henning landed at Northwestern and found his role elevated.
He ranked third on the team with 361 receiving yards and four scores in the 11 games he played.
Henning also had 26 carries for 109 yards and one touchdown.
Nikai Hill Green Hill Green is another Michigan State player who followed Biff Poggi to Charlotte this offseason.
The linebacker ranked second in Charlotte with 73 tackles this season.
Hillgreen had nine TFLs and two sacks for the 49ers.
Hillgreen recently entered the transfer portal and is likely looking for another opportunity at a Power Five program.
Giles Jackson Jackson moved to Washington in 2021.
The speedy receiver played in just four games this season due to injury.
He finished the ’23 regular season with 13 receptions, 103 yards, and one score.
Jackson and Washington will play Oregon on Friday night for the Pac-12 championship.
Cade McNamara After starting at Michigan in 2021, McNamara lost the starting spot to J.J.
McCarthy in 2022.
McNamara, along with tight end Eric Orr, transferred to Iowa last offseason.
McNamara was named the starter but suffered a season-ending injury against Michigan State.
In the five games he played, he threw for 505 yards, four touchdowns, and three interceptions.
He announced that he will return to Iowa State in 2023-2024.
Joe Milton Milton moved to Tennessee in 2021 and could finally start a full season with the Vols in 2023.
However, things were inconsistent and erratic at times for Milton.
Milton still has a cannon in his arm, but it’s not always as accurate.
He threw for 2,813 yards, 20 touchdowns, and five interceptions.
Milton completed 64.
7% of his passes in 2023.
RJ Moten Moten, a starter at Michigan in 2022, committed to Florida last offseason.
He started only six games for the Gators and finished with eight tackles and two TFL.
Eyabi Okie Anoma Another player from Michigan heading to Charlotte with Biff Poggi.
The 49ers will be Okie Anoma’s fourth school, but he shined on the field with Charlotte in 2023.

The former five-star recruit recorded 56 tackles and led the team with 11.
5 TFL and 5.
5 sacks.
George Rooks Rooks returned to the East and transferred to Boston College this offseason.
He appeared in all 12 games for the Eagles and led the team with 29 tackles.
He also recorded 2.
5 TFL and 1.
5 sacks in 2023.
Andre Seldon The former Wolverine is in his second season at New Mexico State.
Cerdan finished sixth on the team with 45 tackles.
The former Michigan product also had an interception in 2023.
Deuce Spurlock Spurlock was a redshirt freshman at Michigan in 2022 before transferring to Florida this offseason.
He saw just three games against the Gators this season, all of them on special teams.
Spurlock came to Michigan as a four-star linebacker.
Christian Turner Turner played at Michigan in 2018-2019 and then played two seasons at Wake Forest.
As of 2023, Turner has played in all 12 games for the Indiana Hoosiers.
In 12 games this year, Turner carried the ball 52 times for 227 yards and two scores.
Taylor Upshaw Upshaw originally transferred to Colorado to play in Coach’s prime, but it may not have worked out as he entered the portal right after the spring game.
Upshaw landed in Arizona and helped the Wildcats go 9-3.
Upshaw played in all 12 games and finished seventh on the team with 30 tackles.
The edge defender led Arizona with 11.

5 sacks in 2023.
Dan Villari Former quarterback Villari is in his second season with the Orange after transferring to Syracuse.
When you think of Villari, think of the Saints’ Taysom Hill.
He is a man who can do anything.
He played in all 12 games this season and contributed everywhere.
Villari completed 19-of-22 for 122 yards and one TD pass.
He completed 44 passes for 289 yards and two touchdowns.
And Villari caught 20 passes for 180 yards and three completions.
Julius Wershoff Wershoff was another Michigan player who followed Biff Poggi to Charlotte in hopes of finding a bigger role than he had at Michigan.
But he played in just four games with the 49ers this season.
Wershoff had 4 tackles against Charlotte.
