Aaron Rodgers’ extension with Green Bay Packers includes $150 million over first three years
Green Bay, Wisconsin Aaron Rodgers, the quarterback for the Green Bay Packers, signed a contract extension that indicates there’s a strong likelihood they’ll be together for the next two seasons at least.
According to a copy of the contract obtained by ESPN, the agreement, which he signed on Tuesday, a week after he declared he would rejoin the team after thinking about his future, is essentially a three-year, $150 million contract with two voidable years in 2025 and 2026 that help with salary-cap purposes. The salary-cap charge of $46,144,156 that had been applied to Rodgers, 38, has been lowered by roughly $18 million.
This season, the two-time league MVP will earn $41.95 million, fully guaranteed. This amount will come from a $1.15 million base salary plus a $40.8 million roster bonus (which will be considered a signing bonus for salary-cap purposes). His $59.465 million salary in 2023 is also assured. His $49.25 million guarantee for 2024 is limited to injuries sustained at the time of signing.
The Packers would have to pay out at least $68 million in dead money (and up to $99.8 million if it happened before June 1) if Aaron Rodgers played just one season before retiring, being released, or being traded in 2023. This is another indication that the quarterback plans to play or has committed to playing at least two more seasons.
Over the weekend, a member of the Packers’ medical staff made a flight to see Rodgers and perform the physical that is necessary prior to signing a contract. That being done, the deal was sealed.
