Tiger football team adds second former player to its coaching staff

MEMPHIS, Tenn. Two days after the UofM football squad announced the addition of a former player to its coaching staff, it says another former Tiger is headed “home” to help coach the defense.

Reggie Howard will be on staff again after serving as the Tigers’ high school relations director in 2022 and, prior to that, a defensive assistant in 2017.

Howard played cornerback for the Tigers before being drafted into the NFL in 2000.

He played for several teams, including the New Orleans Saints, the Miami Dolphins and the Carolina Panthers, where he played in the 2004 Super Bowl.

“We are excited with the addition of Reggie Howard to our staff,” Head Coach Ryan Silverfield said. “It’s great to add another Tiger alum to the staff. Reggie will make a terrific impact not only on our cornerbacks but on our defense as a whole and our entire program.”

On Wednesday, Silverfield announced that former Tiger lineman Lou Esposito will be on staff to help coach the defense.

Howard was previously the defense quality control coach for the NFL’s Washington Commanders.

He has several years of coaching at Campbell University as co-defensive coordinator and associate head coach, as well as at Lane College in Jackson, Tenn., and at Kirby High School in Memphis.

Howard described the opportunity to coach for the Tigers as “amazing.”

“I am extremely excited to return home to the University of Memphis football program and I’m all in,” he said.
