The Enquirer received confirmation on Tuesday from multiple league sources that FC Cincinnati was loaning Barreal to the Brazilian top division’s Cruzeiro Esporte Clube.
Along with a $4 million or more buyout option that Cruzeiro can use to permanently acquire Barreal, the loan also involves an upfront payment made to FC Cincinnati for the player. Then, in the event that Cruzeiro sold Barreal’s rights in the future, FCC would keep a sizeable portion of the sell-on charge.
According to sources, if FCC receives a transfer offer that exceeds Cruzeiro’s $4 million-plus purchase trigger, FC Cincinnati also has the option to cancel the loan.
After Barreal rejoined his teammates for preseason in Clearwater, Florida, on February 10, it became clear that the loan was necessary. The sources claimed Barreal made it apparent he wanted to leave FC Cincinnati as soon as possible after his intended move to Europe fell through.
