Benny Williams is suspended from the team, and Maliq Brown will not dress in the exhibition final.
Prior to its game against St. Rose, Syracuse basketball announced two roster updates.
Syracuse basketball announced on Wednesday, just over an hour before the team’s regular season finale against St. Rose, that forward Benny Williams had been suspended and that Maliq Brown would not play.
The incident with Williams was described as a “violation of team rules,” and he is expected to return to the programme soon.
Brown is not dressing for precautionary reasons, citing a “mild lower-body injury.”
Williams is expected to serve as a veteran leader for the Orange this season. Needless to say, this suspension is not a promising start. Fortunately, it is the preseason and hopefully only a minor issue. The fact that he is expected to return to the programme soon is encouraging in that regard.
Injuries are never fun, but in an exhibition like this, even minor mishaps can lead to being extra cautious. If this were a regular-season game, Brown would be much more likely to play. Brown is expected to be a key player this season, playing both power forward and centre for new head coach Adrian Autry.
The Orange concludes exhibition season play Wednesday night against St. Rose at the JMA Wireless Dome. The regular season begins Monday night, when New Hampshire visits town.
