PHOENIX: Despite having just finished their second-worst season in franchise history, the Phoenix Mercury are still regarded as a desirable location despite their recent troubles.
Phoenix has long been growing, ranking as the fifth most populous city in the United States. In the winter, when other regions freeze over, the weather is lovely. Hikers and tourists are drawn to the picturesque vistas of the distant red cliffs. Professional athletes are familiar with the allure of the Valley, which makes sense given the abundance of visitors to the area.
Even though the Mercury had a miserable 9–31 record in 2023, they are quickly rising to the top of the WNBA rankings.
With three titles under their belt, the Mercury are among the most accomplished clubs in the league, but a new administration has made the team once again one of the best places to play. The more than $100 million that new owner Mat Ishbia put in a new practice facility is a major factor in their comeback.
It’s obvious that Ishbia has big plans for the Mercury, and in July 2023 he brought on general manager Nick U’Ren to help carry out his vision. Although the large investment might appear progressive to many outside the front office, U’Ren and Ishbia simply anticipate it.
Before joining the Mercury, U’Ren worked for the Golden State Warriors for ten years as an executive. “I don’t know how much we’re forcing (the status quo to change) as much as we just think there is a standard of how things should be done and how these athletes should be treated,” U’Ren said.
“We want to act in a way that makes us proud of the way this company is managed. Both the resources we offer and the way we handle players are something we’re proud of. That should help the league progress. I hope the players understand it and want to come. Everyone, starting with Mat (Ishbia), adheres to this ideal.
