Former Detroit Tigers’ All-Star Reportedly Wants Two-Year Deal as He Remains Unsigned
Right-hand pitcher Michael Lorenzen is apparently clinging to the notion that he wants a two-year deal even though he is still unsigned.
The following details were provided by Ken Rosenthal of “The Athletic”:
Right-hander Michael Lorenzen, a free agent, is still looking for a two-year contract, according to people with knowledge of his plans.
The 32-year-old Lorenzen made $9.25 million in revenue last season, including $750,000 in bonuses. If he were to sign a two-year contract with a rise in his average annual worth, he could potentially receive a $20 million guarantee.
It makes perfect sense, in Lorenzen’s opinion, that he would choose a multi-year contract. Having just made an All-Star team with the Detroit Tigers, he is 32 years old and believes that this is his greatest opportunity to profit from the free agent market. But with free agency moving slowly, he might be better off waiting for a team to go hurt and a little desperate (looking at the Boston Red Sox in light of today’s Lucas Giolito story).
The California native has pitched in nine major league seasons with the Cincinnati Reds, Los Angeles Angels, Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies. He went 9-9 last season with the Tigers and Phillies (he was traded midseason). Lorenzen tossed a no-hitter upon arrival in Philadelphia and is 40-38 lifetime with a 4.11 ERA.
