Up next is Nebraska’s offensive line group, which took a step forward in 2023 and needs to continue that upward trend in year two of Matt Rhule’s tenure in Lincoln.

The one unit on Nebraska’s roster that benefited from continuity in Matt Rhule’s debut season going into 2023 was the offensive line.

The March Nebraska reset: Offensive line

The heavily criticized Nebraska offensive line from 2022 did improve in 2023. Ben Scott, a center, emerged from the transfer portal as a hit player, offering consistency at the position, and Bryce Benhart enjoyed his finest season as a Husker.

Nebraska finished second in the Big Ten in rushing last season, and anecdotally, the pass protection was improved, though the Huskers did give up 30 sacks on the year — a slight improvement from the 2022 season. How might the group have been helped in the run game had it not regularly faced eight- and nine-man defensive fronts?

Work continues after win for Nebraska offensive line

In addition to having significant experience in its starting rotation last season, Nebraska was able to also get freshmen like Gunnar Gottula and Sam Sledge into the two-deep.

Success for this group in 2024 will be showing that what it did in 2023 was the first step in an upward trend.
