Kerr Kriisa announces departure, will enter NCAA transfer portal

The most polarizing Arizona men’s basketball player in recent memory is reportedly moving on.

Point guard Kerr Kriisa is entering the NCAA transfer portal after three seasons with the Wildcats, according to ESPN’s Jonathan Givony.

Kriisa then confirmed his departure on Instagram

The 6-foot-3 junior just finished his second straight season as the Pac-12’s top assist leader, becoming the first player to do so since Brandon Granville of USC in 1999–2001. Alongside Damon Stoudamire, Kriisa became the second player from UA to record 80 or more 3-pointers in a season.

Kriisa averaged 9.9 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 5.1 assists a game, but he only shot 37.2 percent from the field and only made 36.6 percent of his three-pointers. Despite having a shoulder injury that he received early in the Pac-12, he was able to average 3.8 points, 1.5 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and be 4 of 20 from three in his last four games, which included the Pac-12 and NCAA tournaments.

Kriisa averaged 9.4 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 4.7 assists over the course of his career. He is one of three Wildcats with multiple triple-doubles, and his 177 made threes rank 10th in school history.

The UA fan base, which seemed divided on whether Kriisa should concentrate on being a 3-point shooter or a point guard rather than trying to do both, was divided on whether to love or dislike the player. Despite persistent requests for change, Coach Tommy Lloyd, who took over for Sean Miller, may be likely to bring him to Xavier, has persevered with him for the previous two seasons.

The door is ajar for Kylan Boswell, who is still 17 years old, to take up the point now that Kriisa has moved on. During his true freshman season, Boswell averaged 4.6 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 1.6 assists. He shot 45 percent for the season, but over Arizona’s final 10 games, he shot 65.9 percent, making 12 of 22 three-pointers and having a 2.33-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio.

Given that Courtney Ramey and Cedric Henderson Jr. are no longer eligible, Arizona will now need to replace all three of its starting guards.
