A’s sign former Giants third baseman Davis to one-year contract

The article A’s sign former Giants third baseman Davis to a one-year deal first ran on NBC Sports Bay Area.

J.D. Davis, the third baseman, is leaving the San Francisco Giants to go to a different side of the Bay.

Before the transaction was made public on Saturday morning, FanSided’s Robert Murray first reported on Friday that Davis had been officially signed by the Athletics to a one-year contract.

Davis’ agreement with Oakland is for one-year, $2.5 million, with $1 million in incentives, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported Friday.

The 30-year-old will be an asset to the A’s, who are hoping to turn things around after a challenging 2023 season in which they ended with the poorest record in baseball (50-112).

After playing in Major League Baseball for seven years, Davis has been a member of the Houston Astros, New York Mets, and most recently the Giants.

Davis’ exit was made possible by San Francisco’s signing of former A’s third baseman Matt Chapman; the veteran infielder was placed on waivers by the Giants last weekend and was officially released on Monday.

That cleared a path for Oakland to bring in Davis, giving the A’s offense an immediate boost as he comes off a season in which he hit 18 home runs and had drove in 69 RBIs for the Giants in 118 games.

Now Davis can provide a veteran presence for an A’s roster loaded with talented, but young players eager to reverse the franchise’s fortunes in recent seasons.
