Joson Sanon, No. 9 basketball recruit in 2025, chooses Arizona
The No. 9-ranked prospect in the Class of 2025, Joson Sanon, confirmed his commitment to Arizona to ESPN.
“On Wednesday, I’m heading to Arizona,” declared Sanon. “I adore how they get you open, how they score, and how well they fit. They play quickly, and it was alluring to be at the heart of a potent offense. Before the transfer portal really gets rolling, I intended to shut myself in.”
Sanon claims he considered a number of universities, including Kentucky, Kansas, UConn, Louisville, Indiana, and others, before deciding on the Wildcats.
Sanon plans to graduate high school this summer and reclassify to 2024, which will make him eligible to enroll in college immediately and give him the option to enter the 2025 NBA draft. He was projected as the 2025 draft’s No. 28 prospect in a mock draft released on ESPN last month.
One of the top scorers in the high school game is Sanon, a 6-foot-5 wing for Vermont Academy who is regarded as one of the best shooters in the league. He claimed that part of his decision came from having assisted his team in winning the NEPSAC AAA championship two weeks prior.
“I had a couple of benchmarks for this season that would help me decide if I’m ready to graduate high school early,” Sanon said. “I wanted to win a championship, lead a team, be a primary scorer, and really lock in defensively. I’m physically strong enough for college. The next step is learning how to think the game better and adding to what I already do.”
Sanon’s parents immigrated to the United States from Haiti in the late 1990s. He was raised in Fall River, Massachusetts. He says he wants to become the second Haitian player in the NBA, following Bennedict Mathurin, an Arizona alum.
With a 25-8 record this year, the Wildcats are ranked second in the West region of the NCAA tournament. They take on No. 15 Long Beach State in Salt Lake City on Thursday in their opening matchup. Along with top-20 prospect Carter Bryant, No. 34 prospect Jamari Phillips, and No. 89 prospect Emmanuel Stephen, Sanon leads its 2024 class.
Much of Arizona’s youthful core is anticipated to stay, but the team’s top four All-Conference scorers are probably going to depart.
