Leinster Rugby announce Ireland stars as co-captains for this season

As of right now, Leinster will have co-captains in place of Johnny Sexton.

James Ryan and Garry Ringrose, two seasoned Ireland internationals, will alternate as captains for the balance of the 2023–2024 season, according to Blues manager Leo Cullen’s announcement.

These athletes are part of the group of Ireland’s top players from Leinster who resumed training this week after taking a break following their performances at the Rugby World Cup.

Luke McGrath’s eight-week absence due to a knee injury sustained during the season opener against Glasgow Warriors left back row Scott Penney as the team’s captain in their absence.

Sexton concluded his tenure with the province at the conclusion of the previous campaign, following Ireland’s World Cup quarterfinal elimination, by quitting the game.

However, the out-half was unable to play in Leinster’s Champions Cup and URC run-in due to a major groin injury that he sustained in mid-March.

Row two Ryan, 27, captained the team during the Champions Cup final loss to La Rochelle. He has 73 Leinster caps.

Ringrose, 28, has also skippered the Blues. He has made 116 appearances for the province.

They are also both in the running to be Ireland’s new skipper as Andy Farrell assesses his options ahead of the 2024 Six Nations, which begins with a clash with France in Paris on Friday, February 4 Ryan has previously led Ireland.

“We are delighted to announce James and Garry as Leinster’s co-captains for season 23/24,” said Cullen.
