Chris Caray, a fourth-generation MLB broadcaster, was recruited by the Oakland Athletics to work as a television play-by-play announcer, NBC Sports California reported on Tuesday.
Chip, Caray’s father, is the St. Louis Cardinals’ play-by-play voice on television. For thirty-two years, Chris’s grandfather, Skip, called Atlanta Braves games. Lastly, Harry, his great-grandfather, received the Ford C. Frick Award for excellence in baseball broadcasting from the Hall of Fame.
Chris Caray most recently worked as a play-by-play broadcaster for the Amarillo Sod Poodles, the Double-A club of the Arizona Diamondbacks, and the Arizona Fall League. Stefan, his identical twin, also held this position. He steps into the booth with Jenny Cavnar, who was recruited by the Athletics last week, making history as the first female play-by-play announcer in MLB history.
Dallas Braden, a former pitcher for the Athletics, is still the team’s color commentary television analyst.
“Ever since I was a 12-year-old kid, I dreamed of becoming a Major League broadcaster,” Chris Caray said in a press release. “Now, I’m thrilled that that dream has come true. I’m honored and proud to join a franchise with the rich history of the Oakland A’s, and I can’t wait to grow along with this young, exciting team and my new partners with NBC Sports California, Jenny Cavnar and Dallas Braden.”
