Mets put pitcher on IL after he said he was healthy following last outing

A last-minute injury determined the last roster places for the New York Mets.

Sean Reid-Foley will begin the season on the disabled list due to a right shoulder impingement, as reported by Tim Healey of Newsday. Three pitchers were vying for two openings, thus the move provides relievers Yohan Ramirez and Michael Tonkin jobs on Opening Day.

Reid-Foley assured reporters on Monday that he was well, according to Healey. Due to biceps soreness, Reid-Foley threw 23 pitches on Sunday, March 25, his first since March 9. He gave up two singles and a walk in that outing without recording an out. During spring training, he threw four innings, giving up just those two earned runs and striking out seven.

Mets put Max Kranick on injured list in latest hit to pitching depth

The somewhat unexpected placement of Billy Eppler on the injured list reminds us of the former general manager Billy Eppler, who MLB banned through the end of the 2024 World Series due to improper use of the injured list. However, there is no reason to believe that the Mets and President of Baseball Operations David Stearns are fabricating the injury.

The 28-year-old Reid-Foley joined the Mets in 2021 after being transferred as part of the Steven Matz trade. Over the course of three seasons, he has thrown 38 1/3 innings with a 4.93 ERA; last year, he only threw 7 2/3 innings.
