In front of over 60,000 spectators, Nebraska football played their spring game on Saturday. Four key points emerged from the afternoon:
The five-star variation
Dylan Raiola cannot longer be hidden by Nebraska.
qb
Matt Rhule, the head coach, has tried his best to control the buzz. He has insisted on a three-horse battle for the starting quarterback spot. The freshman sensation will not be anointed.
But on Saturday, Raiola separated himself as the best quarterback the Huskers have to offer. His throws looked effortless, his release lightning quick. Raiola went 4-of-4 on his first drive including a beautiful touchdown pass to sophomore wide receiver Janiran Bonner.
He was not finished. Raiola dropped back and threw a throw 45 yards into the air during the second quarter. Jaylen Lloyd, a sophomore wide receiver, grabbed it precisely in his stride and scored a 64-yard touchdown.
Over the next three years, Husker fans will see that link a lot.
Raiola completed 16 of his 22 passes for 239 passing yards by the end of the afternoon. Although his lone interception ricocheted off a receiver’s hands, Raiola accepted the blame after the game. His placement, he claims, may improve much further.
Yes, it is early. He is untouchable by the defense. On Saturday, though, Raiola lived up to his five-star rating. In August, he ought to start for Nebraska.
