Alasdair Gold says ‘one or two players might be coming in quickly’ once Tottenham Hotspur seal the deal for Empoli goalkeeper, Guglielmo Vicario.

The Tottenham transfer expert pointed towards the centre-back positions and how it needs upgrading this summer, amid links with Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba.

The 24-year-old was described as ‘very fast’ by Gold and someone who suits Ange Postecoglou’s system in a ‘perfect’ manner, as he told his own YouTube channel.

It seems as though it’s going to be a case of when, not if, Guglielmo Vicario signs, with claims that there might have been a medical over the weekend.

When that is done, it’s one area of the pitch sorted ahead of Hugo Lloris’ exit, with perhaps one of the biggest areas of concern being the heart of the defence.

That’s where someone like Tapsoba comes into play, with Gold sharing that the Burkina Faso international has been compared to former Germany star, Jerome Boateng.

“I get the sense, after Vicario, you might see maybe one or two more players coming in quite quickly after that,” said Gold. “Certainly before the tour. You would hope for maybe another face before pre-season even starts.

“There are a few potentials out there that we keep hearing about – Edmond Tapsoba, 24-year-old, Burkina Faso international. He is an interesting one in the sense that he fits Postecoglou’s system perfectly.

“But from what was reported, it was suggested that Arsenal had looked at him and they hadn’t gone for him because of the price, which would make you wonder that Spurs are notorious for not going for someone because of their price.

“But he does fit the system. He’s very fast. Very good on the ball. A German report compared him to Jerome Boateng. He would fit perfectly. Still a working progress, only 24. – just give it a few days for the centre-back, once they got the goalkeeper through the doors, then you will see the centre-back situation hot up as well.”

Eric Dier needs replacing

Whilst Cristian Romero can be reckless at times, on paper, he is Tottenham’s best defender, then there is Clement Lenglet, who has since returned to Barcelona after his mild loan spell.

It’s pretty clear that Davisnon Sanchez needs to leave after being booed by his own fans last season, which then leaves someone like Eric Dier as the only other senior centre-back.

And whether Spurs sign Tapsoba or not, that backline needs mending, new faces need to be brought in and big-name players, such as Dier, need replacing.
