Las Vegas Aces coach Becky Hammon suspended after allegations of bullying pregnant player

Following an inquiry into claims that a player was harassed because she was pregnant, Las Vegas Aces coach Becky Hammon was suspended without pay for two games. The WNBA said on Tuesday that the franchise also forfeited a 2025 first-round draft pick for breaking league regulations pertaining to player benefits.

Following a months-long inquiry into the team due to remarks made to former Las Vegas forward Dearica Hamby over her pregnancy, the decisions were made. Because of a previous transaction, the Aces do not have a 2024 first-round pick, hence the team lost its 2025 first-round pick.

“The Aces have been disciplined as a result of their failure to comply with league rules and regulations. WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said in a statement, “We are also disheartened by the violation of our Respect in the Workplace policies and remain committed to ensuring that enhanced training is conducted and standards are followed across all WNBA teams.”

Hammon’s suspension follows forward Dearica Hamby’s January statement that the Las Vegas Aces “bullied” and “manipulated” her into becoming pregnant with her second kid. Before the team won its first WNBA championship in September, the two-time all-star, who was selected by the team in the 2015 draft when it was still the San Antonio Stars, inked a multi-year contract extension with the Aces in June.

When Hamby announced that she was expecting her second child following the Aces’ championship, the team asserted that she “didn’t hold up my end of the bargain” because of her pregnancy. In January, the Los Angeles Sparks acquired Hamby along with a 2024 first-round pick in exchange for a 2024 second-round pick and the right to negotiate with forward Amanda Zahui B.

After hearing Hamby’s remarks, the league said it looked into the matter and spoke with 33 persons in addition to “a review of numerous texts, emails, and other documents.” According to the WNBA, there was a transgression when Hammon mentioned Hamby’s pregnancy to her.

The WNBA said that as part of the Aces’ contract extension negotiations with Hamby, assurances of illegal perks were made.

In the course of looking into Hamby’s remarks, the league claimed that a number of people expressed concerns about the Aces’ actions during the free agency window. After the team signed forward Alysha Clark and two-time league MVP Candace Parker, there were rumors that the team was paying players under the table. The WNBA had previously stated that it was investigating the franchise.
