Unsung reasons FSU football, Mike Norvell star in the transfer portal
TAMPA β Using the transfer portal, it’s simple to view the highlights of Florida State football’s achievements. Three of the top 40 picks (Braden Fiske, Keon Coleman, and Jarred Verse) were among the eight portal picks that coach Mike Norvell made last month.
However, there is a deeper reason why Norvell is deserving of his title as the master of transfer portals.
Seldom does he and his Seminoles miss.
Prior to the previous season, FSU signed twelve transfers. Nine were either key players or starters. One player, Justin Cryer, was ineligible but is anticipated to start this fall, while another, Darrell Jackson, participated in every game. Norvell’s 2022 transfer class saw a majority of its misses due to injuries rather than misevaluations.
The high hit rate of Norvell’s staff is attributed to “knowing what we’re looking for.”
Norvell remarked, “We’re trying to build a team.”
That may seem apparent, but Norvell clarified it on Sunday afternoon before to the Seminole Boosters Tour stop at the JW Marriott Tampa Water Street.
In Norvell’s opinion, roster management goes beyond simple talent acquisition.
“There are many programs with talent in them that may not succeed on the field because the talent is (only) in isolated sparks,” Norvell stated.
When those distinct sparks of talent work in unison, true achievement occurs.
