Spurs have announced the departure of Harry Winks who leaves the club after a marathon stint at the north London side that began way back in 2014, with his Premier League debut coming in the 2016/2017 season, where he scored his first goal for Spurs, away at Liverpool.
15 appearances for England along the way tells its own tale of a Tottenham nearly man who was seemingly always shaping up for a memorable career, but never quite had one of any note. Winks’ Spurs career fizzles out with a loan move to Sampdoria where he racked up 19 appearances, upon returning to London Winks found himself a part of James Maddison’s arrival and will be playing for Leicester City next season.
Many will be wheeling out the phrase, ‘loyal servant’ which is beyond me. It was always my understanding he was paid handsomely across his dozen seasons or so.
Spurs need to keep up the pace in the transfer market, there are many more where Winks came from. Tanguy Ndombele arrived at Hotspur Way this weekend looking as if it was all too much for him. Eric Dier has surely run out of places to hide, and Ben Davies is another one that has been making up the numbers. If fans want to see Spurs improve, improve the quality of the players. Sacking coaches that have been serial winners everywhere else they have managed, is not the answer.
