Paul Robinson has claimed Tom Heaton would be the perfect replacement in the Leeds United goal if Illan Meslier departs.
Leeds’ current No.1 Meslier could face a move away from Elland Road following relegation and previous links to top clubs [The Sun], meaning manager Daniel Farke would likely seek a replacement.
Heaton currently finds himself back at Manchester United after moves to Burnley and Aston Villa and started in Eric ten Hag’s pre-season opener against Leeds on Wednesday (12 July).
Robinson has tipped Heaton to make the switch to the Championship side in a bid to be a starting goalkeeper again after making just senior three appearances in the last three seasons including a 22-minute cameo in the Champions League for Manchester United.
Speaking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said: “For me personally, I’d love to see Tom Heaton sign for the club. He suffered a really bad injury at Aston Villa and never got his place back there because Emi Martinez came in.
“He then came to Manchester United but never really played any first-team football. For me somebody like Tom, knowing him and having worked with him, he’s a No.1 goalkeeper and he wants to play.
“There’s still something itching inside him. He needs to play week in and week out and I think he’ll be the perfect fit for Leeds.
“I’ve seen he’s been linked with other clubs in this window as a No 2. He’s been linked with Everton after Begovic left the club. I’ve seen he’s been linked with Luton.
“But for me, if Leeds can pull off a signing of that calibre, I think a goalkeeper of that experience and age would be a great signing for Leeds if Meslier were to leave the club.”
