The young Chelsea centre-back was impressive for the Terriers in 2021/22 as he took his first steps in senior football and he has continued his trajectory at Brighton this season
Former Terriers loanee Levi Colwill admits he has had to learn to be more receptive to learning from his more experienced teammates since taking the step up to play Premier League football on loan at Brighton and Hove Albion.
One of the best young loanees ever to pass through Huddersfield Town, a then-teenage Colwill came to the John Smith’s Stadium in summer 2021 having never played senior football before but immediately established himself as a reliable regular starter in the side that reached last year’s Championship play-off final.
That loan spell established Colwill’s credentials as a player who was already capable of playing at the highest level, but he had to leave his parent club Chelsea again to get that experience and has enjoyed an equally impressive season at the Amex Stadium.
Now guaranteed sixth place regardless of how results pan out on the final day of the season, Brighton have clinched European football for the first time in their history, and centre-back Colwill credits the dressing room dynamic both for their achievements and his own continued development
He told The Athletic: “The changing room is the biggest part. These players are amazing. They are there for you, to put an arm around you, to give you advice, to tell you off. It’s just a perfect balance and I appreciate it so much. As a young player, for all of us, for everyone in the changing room, this is what’s going to take us to the next level.
“People just being on us every day, that’s what you need. I might not have liked it at the start of the season, or last year [at Town]. I’d be thinking, ‘Why are these players always on to me?’, but I came to the realisation that I want them to be on to me, because it shows they care. I appreciate that so much. I’d never take that away from anyone. When they care, every day, it’s only going to improve you. I just love it.”
Football.London write that Chelsea have been impressed by Colwill’s form on the south coast and expect him to be a key player next season, but the 20 year old has too much on his plate to start thinking about his future too intently just now.
He added to The Athletic: “Brighton have done a lot for me. They put their trust in me when others didn’t and I’m a person that loves to repay that. We’ll see. I don’t know what is going to happen. I’m still here until the end of the season. I just focus on that, then I’ve got the [under-21] Euros in the summer. After that, we’ll see what happens and go from there.”
