Paul Merson has predicted the result of the final-day Premier League clash between Leeds United and Tottenham Hotspur at Elland Road.

It’s a win-or-bust situation for Sam Allardyce’s side on Sunday afternoon (28 May) who need three points to give themselves any hope of Premier League survival.

Tottenham are also in need of a win to give themselves hope of Conference League qualification, however, Merson believes the match will end in a draw.

“This is a hard one to call as both teams have been quite unpredictable in recent weeks,” wrote Merson (Sportskeeda predictions, 25 May).

“Leeds United played half of West Ham’s reserves the other day and managed to lose despite taking the lead, while Tottenham’s away record is atrocious, to say the least.

“A draw is no good for either team, so I think this will be an end-to-end gung-ho football match. It’ll suit both teams and if you’re watching this game as a neutral, I think it’ll have bags of goals. Leeds United 2-2 Tottenham Hotspur.”

Against the odds

If Leeds stay up, it will be completely against the odds. Sam Allardyce’s side need a number of things to fall into place in order for Premier League football to be present at Elland Road next season. The players have to focus on getting the job done against Spurs.

Ryan Mason’s side are all over the place at present and could be there for the taking. An early goal could be vital. News of an early Leeds strike would emerge at Goodison Park and heap yet more pressure on Sean Dyche’s Everton.

If relegation is the outcome of the campaign, Andrea Radrizzani and the board will have plenty of questions to answer. Why was Jesse Marsch given so long in charge? What was the Javi Gracia appointment about? And what led to Victor Orta’s sacking.

Perhaps Radrizzani should pay more attention to the ongoings at Elland Road instead of his quest to buy soon-to-be Serie B club Sampdoria.
