Leeds United may now face a battle to land Steven Gerrard with Leicester City also interested in appointing him.
Steven Gerrard is now at the centre of a tug of war between two Champions clubs with Leeds United and Leicester City keen.
That is according to The Sun, who report that Leicester City have joined the race for Gerrard’s services.
Leicester sacked Brendan Rodgers in April and brought in Dean Smith in the hope of achieving Premier League survival.
That didn’t happen though as Leicester suffered relegation into the Championship, meaning big changes are on the way.
Smith is in contention to keep the job full-time but Leicester are looking elsewhere too.
It’s stated that Gerrard’s representatives are close to Leicester and could help him land the Foxes job.
Graham Potter is thought to be Leicester’s first choice for the job and he has been sounded out for the move.
Leicester have other targets in mind though and Gerrard is thought to be one of them.
That move would be somewhat ironic; Gerrard played under Rodgers at Liverpool and replaced Smith as Aston Villa boss in 2021.
Leeds United face battle for Steven Gerrard
Rumours of Leicester City’s interest comes amid claims that Gerrard could become the new Leeds United boss.
The Mirror (04/06, p78) claim that Gerrard is a prime target for Leeds as they look to replace Sam Allardyce.
It’s stated that Gerrard and Gary McAllister are ‘on standby’ to take the Leeds job following their relegation.
McAllister was a hero at both Leeds and Leicester during his playing days and would no doubt love to return to one of them.
Leeds now face a battle though with Gerrard also wanted at Leicester as both clubs attempt to recover from relegation.
Even with some sales expected, both Leeds and Leicester will expect to be in contention for promotion.
That will an appealing prospect for Gerrard, who needs to rebuild his managerial reputation after leaving Aston Villa.
