Carlos Carvalhal emerged as a Leeds United managerial target on the weekend and he masterminded a stunning win over Barcelona to help his Celta Vigo side avoid relegation – with Raphinha unable to prevent a 2-1 defeat.

The Sun on Sunday (4/6; page 60) reported that 57-year-old Carvalhal is being considered by the Leeds board this summer. A recognisable face in the Championship, he was boss of Sheffield Wednesday between 2015 and 2017.

Carvalhal is the latest of a number of managers to be linked with Leeds. Along with the likes of Steven Gerrard, Regis Le Bris, Scott Parker, Graham Potter, Brendan Rodgers and others. But on Sunday, his full focus was La Liga.

Indeed, Carvalhal’s side were one point above the bottom three and played host to La Liga champions Barcelona. Plenty of clubs were still able to be relegated on the final day. Celta, given their opposition, were a front runner.

But, Carvalhal orchestrated a historic 2-1 win on the final day over the likes of Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski and Sergio Busquets to secure a place in La Liga next season. Celta actually finished as high as 13th in the table.\

Still only three above 18th-placed Valladolid, who have been relegated alongside Espanyol and Elche. It probably means that Carvalhal is going to remain at Celta next season, where he has a year left on his current contract.

Especially, given he only took the job in November 2022. He now has the chance to work with his squad during the entire pre-season and bring in the players he wants. The win over Barcelona and safety probably ends our chances.

It is expected that Leeds fans can expect some takeover news this week and from that point on in, the decisions regarding a sporting director and manager can be made. Hopefully, this is a big week for Leeds fans and our future.
