Leeds United are in discussions with free agent Sam Byram over a return to the club this month, having trained with the club and taken part in pre-season.

Leeds are not far away from the start of the season and there are still a number of key areas where Daniel Farke could do with extra bodies.

His defence needs more depth than it currently has due to being stripped by relegation loan clauses, seeing four defenders leave on loan during this window.

Sam Byram to Leeds?

LeedsAllOver revealed in July that a free transfer move for Sam Byram could be on the cards after he was taken on trial at Thorp Arch, and did reasonably well in pre-season fixtures under his former Norwich City boss, Farke.

The full-back’s injury record has been something of a concern to the coaching staff, having undergone two hamstring surgeries during his time at Carrow Road.

Now, the Yorkshire Evening Post’s Joe Donnohue has revealed that discussions are ongoing between the club and Byram over a transfer.

How has a move come about?

It seems as though Byram has done well during his brief stint with the rest of the squad at Thorp Arch, showing his credentials both as a player, but as a member of the dressing room too:

“The YEP understands Byram has impressed at Thorp Arch, displaying positive signs on and off the pitch, and so far has not experienced any injury problems from training with the squad, or in the aftermath of Leeds’ pre-season matches.”

Leeds are in no rush to tie the 29-year-old down to a contract, with the registration deadline for the first game of the season likely to elapse before he is to sit down to sign a contract.

It gives the club the time to assess his fitness levels alongside Rob Price, giving the club a month to get a well-rounded view of where he’s at currently.

Based on what we’ve seen from Byram so far in pre-season, I think this is a transfer we definitely should be looking at.

He adds much-needed cover on both sides of the defence, and won’t be expecting to be a starter after his injury troubles.

Byram has clearly been a positive influence on the side during his time here so far, using his experience very well to help build a good atmosphere.
