Lopetegui could quit Wolves in days
Julen Lopetegui could quit Wolves before the new season starts, sources have told Football Insider.
It is believed the Spaniard is concerned about how he can continue at the club with new restrictions on the funds he has available to spend in the transfer market.
Lopetegui is believed to have aired his frustrations to the Wolves hierarchy and one well-placed source said he could walk out on the club “in the next few days”.
Football Insider first revealed on 22nd May that Lopetegui was contemplating his future at Wolves and whether he would return for the 2023-24 campaign.
He was convinced to stay on but the situation has subsequently worsened, with the club losing star players including Raul Jimenez to Premier League rivals Fulham, and club captain Ruben Neves, who joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal at the start of the window.
Lopetegui is now even more concerned he will be left with a squad unable to challenge in the new season, with indications he has little to spend on new signings.
As well as Jimenez and Neves – who left for a club-record fee – the Spaniard will also be without Nathan Collins, Ryan Giles, and Conor Coady next season.
Lopetegui arrived at Molineux in November 2022 and signed a three-year contract at the club, which runs until June 2025.
The Spaniard ensured safety for Wolves in his first season at the club, as his side finished in 13th place with a total of 41 points, which was eight points safe from relegated Leicester City.
