Sheffield Wednesday have revamped their first team squad this summer, bringing in seven new players, but manager Xisco Munoz wants to further increase competition for places
Sheffield Wednesday manager Xisco Munoz says the approach to transfers right now is one-way traffic. The Owls were left with a skeleton squad after a glut of departures at the end of last season.
Slowly but surely Munoz has built numbers back up with the capture of Anthony Musaba from Monaco representing the seventh new arrival this summer. Munoz has said his intention is to build a group that effectively has two players per position. But when quizzed on the possibility of players being sold or loaned out, he remained coy and said that right now he’s just focused on deals that see players arrive at S6.
Speaking to Yorkshire Live, he said: “Right now the most important thing is getting two players per place. And after when we have that we will see if maybe we can change (allow to leave) one or not.
“I don’t know because right now we’re closer to having two players per position. We know we have 22 places and three ‘keepers and we don’t have that situation yet.
“Afterwards maybe the market gives a big chance (to sell) so we will see. But right now I don’t think about which one is maybe going to leave. We’re thinking about how we can help the group that we have and for who is coming and try to give better solutions.”
Munoz confirmed to Yorkshire Live last month that former West Brom recruitment guru Luke Dowling was about to join the club as they looked to ramp up their work in the transfer market.
In a further update, the Spaniard has confirmed that Dowling is now working alongside Dean Hughes (recruitment analyst) and owner Dejphon Chansiri as part of the club’s ‘committee-style’ approach to deals.
Munoz added: “Yes, he is working. It’s very good and we’re happy with him. He’s given what we asked but also we have Dean and all the parties are working. And the president, whatever time you call him it doesn’t matter because he’s ready to give you an answer.
“With this (set-up) I’m very happy and I’m satisfied because they are working 24 hours to sign good players. It’s not easy for Luke, Dean or the president to find this level of players in such a short time.”
