Tyler Adams remains a Leeds United player for now after his £20m transfer to Chelsea broke down on Friday afternoon

Transfer talks between Tyler Adams and Chelsea have broken down with the midfielder returning to Leeds United imminently. The Premier League giants had triggered the American’s £20m relegation release clause, but have now seen the move break down.

The 24-year-old had been expected to complete a medical and agree personal terms on a transfer to Mauricio Pochettino’s side, but that will not be happening. Adams had been in the capital for the past three days overseeing the final steps of the move.

However, the switch to Stamford Bridge will not happen and Leeds now wait to see if another club triggers the release clause before the end of the transfer window. There has been no acrimony between Adams and Leeds at any stage this summer and he will return to Elland Road without any bad blood.

Chelsea’s pursuit of Adams has been set against the backdrop of the continuing transfer saga involving Brighton & Hove Albion’s Moises Caicedo. The Blues and Liverpool have spent the past few days jockeying for the Ecuadorian, with the bidding up to £111m overnight, according to reports.

Liverpool were understood to have won the race last night, but the most recent reports say Caicedo’s preference is Stamford Bridge. The Caicedo battle between the two clubs has also seemingly spilt into the pursuit of another central midfielder, Southampton’s Romeo Lavia.

The duel between the two sides across these midfield targets may reach a conclusion with a final decision from Caicedo, but in the meantime, Adams remains a Leeds player. Yesterday, Daniel Farke said the American was still three weeks away from joining team training at Thorp Arch.
