Coventry City news from CoventryLive as Sky Blues fan Richard Keys discusses his hopes and fears for his home town club after the disappointment at Wembley

Richard Keys has predicted that it will take time for his beloved Coventry City to “recover” from their play-off final defeat at Wembley Stadium.

The Coventry-born broadcaster and life-long Sky Blues fan admits that despite City missing out on a lucrative promotion to the Premier League to Luton Town in a lottery of a penalty shootout after the two sides drew 1-1 after 120 minutes of football, that the Hatters were the better side who could have thumped Mark Robins’ men had it not been for the intervention of VAR.

“Of course I was gutted for the Super Sky Blues and the thousands that made the trip to Wembley from Coventry and beyond, but I’ve no complaints,” he wrote in his weekly blog.

“To be fair Luton were better than us and had it not been for VAR they could easily have won it by 3 or 4. Luton remind me of Wimbledon. They’ll surprise a few in the PL next season.”

Looking ahead to next season and, perhaps, considering the cautionary tale of Huddersfield Town who made the play-off final last year and ended up in a relegation battle this, Keys continued: “It’ll take Coventry a while to recover.

“Just because they made the play-offs this season doesn’t mean they’ll be challenging again next time. I hope they are. I hope this season was part of a process that sees them rewarded with promotion next time, but there are no guarantees and Mark Robins will know that. There are some big clubs and good teams (there’s a difference) in the Championship next season.”
