Pep Guardiola says Manchester City prospect Cole Palmer is unlikely to go out on loan this season amid reported interest from Leicester City.

Leicester have been linked with a loan move for Palmer in this summer’s transfer window. At one stage, the Foxes and Burnley were said to be “heading the chase” to secure the 21-year-old attacking midfielder’s services for the 2023/24 campaign.

Since then, Brighton & Hove Albion have also been credited with an interest in the England Under-21 international. Palmer hit the headlines on Wednesday night, scoring in Man City’s UEFA Super Cup victory over Sevilla in Greece.

Sevilla took the lead through Youssef En-Nesyri’s towering header and had numerous chances to extend their lead before City struck back through Palmer’s looping header. It ended 1-1 after 90 minutes and Guardiola’s men triumphed on penalties 5-4 after Nemanja Gudelj smashed the last spot-kick of the shoot-out off the bar.

Palmer was named player of the match and afterwards Guardiola addressed the youngster’s future. The Spaniard suggested that Palmer would either stay at the club or be sold on a permanent deal.

“The opinion I had when he arrived is he wanted to leave, but now I don’t know what’s going to happen,” said Guardiola. “I don’t think a loan is going to happen. He’s going to stay or going to sell, but I think a loan is not going to happen.

“He has a character. It’s not easy to play against defenders like (Marcos) Acuna, for example, who is a top defender. It’s not easy, it’s a final. He’s a young player playing in these stages.

“It’s not easy for these guys. He played really, really good and made a fantastic goal, too.”

Leicester will be looking to utilise their Man City links after appointing Guardiola’s former assistant Enzo Maresca as their new head coach. They have already signed Callum Doyle on loan from the reigning Premier League champions, and have been
