Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier has been mooted as an option for Manchester City as they face interest from Bayern Munich for Stefan Ortega.
Leeds’ sales of key players hasn’t exactly been as expected this summer with virtually every major departure thus far being a loan, meaning no money has come in.
Meanwhile, Leeds have strengthened under Daniel Farke with the goalkeeper slot arguably the only position of real depth after Karl Darlow’s arrival to compete with Illan Meslier.
Meslier to Man City?
Bayern Munich bave been linked with multiple ‘keepers so far this summer as they aim to add more depth to their own ranks, with Manuel Neuer out injured long-term.
Now, Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg is sharing that the Bavarian giants have pursued a move for Manchester City’s Stefan Ortega.
What this means for Meslier is that had Ortega made his move to the Bundesliga with Bayern, City would have had to buy a new backup to Ederson, but they have refused to sell the German, despite being ‘offered’ Meslier this week.
Would Meslier leave for Man City?
After being dropped by Sam Allardyce, it seemed to most that Meslier would be leaving Leeds upon relegation, but he’s since made two appearances under Farke this season and is showing no signs of unrest, while others are.
However, Meslier said earlier in the summer that if he was given the choice to leave Elland Road, he would prefer to move to a club where he is playing regularly, rather than to a big club where he’s warming the bench – via Radio RMC Sport.
Meslier would certainly develop into a much better ‘keeper with someone like Ederson as a mentor, but he would also be right to be patient for the best opportunity.
At Leeds, he will probably play often unless the club gets an offer that they would be willing to accept.
As much as Meslier might be keen to take the high-ground with a move to a club where he knows he’ll play, but the chance to move to an elite club might be impossible to refuse.
