Harry Maguire could still join West Ham with Manchester United set to sign three-time Premier League winner

Harry Maguire could still join West Ham with Manchester United set to sign three-time Premier League winner.

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire was actually close to leaving Old Trafford to join West Ham earlier on in the summer transfer window.

West Ham’s move to sign the 30-year-old defender collapsed in the end due to his pay-off demands to Man United.

Hammers boss David Moyes has since gone on to bring Konstantinos Mavropanos the London Stadium.

However, with Kurt Zouma being incredibly injury prone and Angelo Ogbonna on the wrong side of 35, the addition of another centre-back may well be a smart move from Moyes.

And the door could be wide open for the Scot to do just that…

According to The Telegraph, Man United are set to offer Jonny Evans a one-year deal. With another centre-back available to Erik ten Hag, Maguire will fall even further down the pecking order under the Dutchman.

And I really wouldn’t be surprised to see the Hammers come back in for the 30-year-old England international.

I’ve already touched upon the need for another central defender at the London Stadium, but what I haven’t mentioned is that if Moyes sets up with three centre-backs, he won’t have much in reserve if one of Nayef Aguerd, Kurt Zouma or Konstantinos Mavropanos suffer an injury.

I have said time and time again that Manchester United defender Harry Maguire would be a superb signing for West Ham.

His leadership skills, aerial ability and all-around solid defending when playing as part of a deep backline would make us incredibly hard to impenetrate.

With Jonny Evans apparently being offered a one-year deal with Man United, I think that Maguire leaving to join the Hammers, even on loan, would be a no brainer for him and both clubs.

‘Madness’: Michail Antonio reacts to story he’s heard about new Newcastle signing

The biggest footballing story of the past week has to be Newcastle United’s new signing Sandro Tonali’s trip to Wetherspoons. The dinner that captured a nation.

For the uninitiated, of whom I suspect are very few, a post went viral on X last week where someone had spotted a reserved notice on a table in Gosforth Wetherspoons bearing the name Tonali.

Fans and media were convinced it was a wind up and that one of the jokers in the Newcastle dressing room sent him there, maybe telling him it’s the best Italian food outside of Italy. However, Callum Wilson has now hinted that Tonali went there of his own accord, which is equally hilarious to those who know ‘Spoons.

Michail Antonio couldn’t believe Tonali booked a table

The thing that really tickled Wilson’s Footballer’s Football Podcast co-host Michail Antonio though, wasn’t so much that Tonali went to ‘Spoons, but that he booked a table first and used his own name.

Speaking about it on the podcast, Antonio said: “I have been to a Wetherspoons. The madness for me is that man phoned up and booked a table! He put his name to it!

“That is the craziest thing for me. He’s called up and booked a table and put his name down! Everybody knows, he’s coming there after this game.”

Jacob Murphy isn’t off the hook yet

Antonio is right, it could have spectacularly backfired on Tonai if he was after a quiet meal with his girlfriend. Doesn’t he know he’s at the club that has fans who track private jets into Newcastle airport on the daily?

I’m still not convinced that it wasn’t a wind-up by someone in the club, someone who is good at playing along with the dumbfounded masses. I’m still backing Jacob Murphy.

Whether it was a wind-up or not, apparently Tonali enjoyed his night in ‘Spoons. I wonder if he’ll make it his regular. I can just see him sat at the end of the bar on a week off necking jar after jar of Old Perculiar.
