In a transaction that affects Bristol City defender, the Celtic star sends a transfer message to Leicester City and Arsenal.
The on-loan Bristol City defender may become available again during the January transfer window.
Leicester City and Arsenal have received encouragement in their pursuit of Celtic midfielder Kristoffer Ajer.
Following an outstanding season for the Hoops, the defender has permitted his counsel to engage with interested parties, according to Football Insider.
Leicester City, Arsenal, and AC Milan have all been linked with the tall Norwegian.
The Foxes may consider themselves favorites to sign him, considering the 22-year-old was previously managed by Brendan Rodgers at Celtic.
This is significant news for Filip Benkovic’s future.
The defender is presently on loan at Bristol City, with the Foxes reportedly dissatisfied with his progress since spending last season on loan at Celtic. If they are able to sign Ajer, it appears like Benkovic will not be a first-team regular at the King Power Stadium next season.
While Wes Morgan’s contract expires at the end of the season, Caglar Soyuncu and Jonny Evans are now Leicester’s first-choice center-back duo.
If Ajer is signed, Benkovic will tumble to fourth choice at the very least, and Ryan Bennett’s future on loan from Wolves must also be decided.
At the moment, it appears unlikely that the Robins would be interested in Benkovic as a permanent option, yet the news that he is poised to stay at Ashton Gate until the end of the season, whenever that may be, has given them hope.
Following the coronavirus closure, City CEO Mark Ashton has already promised a season of austerity for the club.
However, their stance on Benkovic could alter if West Brom pursue Taylor Moore, who is presently on loan at Blackpool.
There are also doubts about Ashley Williams’ future, who is out of contract at the end of June and has been linked with a move abroad.
It’s possible that Benkovic’s availability piques City’s interest at a later stage, especially because Lee Johnson is still looking for a ball-playing centre-half after losing Adam Webster to Brighton & Hove Albion at the start of the season.
Following the 22-year-old Croatian’s impressive stay at the club last season, Celtic may well want Benkovic if they lose Ajer.
